Seal Snot and Pigeons Cooing

Esperance, a town with a beautiful coastline, crystal clear aqua blue water and white sandy beaches. Although most days the wind was blowing a gale, we found a lovely beach to swim, snorkel, fish, walk along and play at. Twilight Beach was amazing, one afternoon there was a baby seal frolicking in the waves close to shore.

Whilst we were staying at the Seafront Caravan Park we heard a constant drone of what we thought was a pump somewhere nearby. Nick asked a staff member where the pump was, and she replied it's not a pump, it's a pigeon calling for its mate.

The Backsons, (Hamish, Sara & Co) also stayed here, so any thought of an AFD was completely forgotten, and out kids loved exploring and spending time with their kids, cementing a great friendship. One afternoon we walked / scootered / rode bikes / skateboarded down to the local skate park. Along the way we stopped at the jetty where Sammy the resident seal was lying underneath. The kids were amazed and intrigued at how close they could get to him, but Sammy made it very clear where the boundary was. With one eye open he would watch you, and step too close he would lift his head, grunt and with the grunt a spray of snot would cover you. I was taking a photo of Zach & Sammy, from behind a pillar, but he obviously thought I was encroaching on his territory and I got sprayed. Guess it's not an experience everyone has experienced!

Due to the bad weather we went to the library for a couple of mornings to do schoolwork. Abbey enjoyed joining in on the reading/activity group, chatting happily to the kids about her trip around Australia.

We were told of a beautiful beach - Duke of Orleans Bay which is about 80km east of Esperance, we got the last site available, and are heading off there for 4 nights....
